In an unexpected move, prosecutors have now dropped the murder charge against Irish nanny Aisling Brady McCarthy, after a review of the case carried out by the Massachusetts Medical Examiner found that the baby’s cause of death was not murder.

One-year-old Rehma Sabir was found dead back in January 2013 at her home, where she was being cared for by Ms McCarthy. The nanny, who is originally from Cavan and was in the US illegally, was arrested and accused of the child’s murder.

She has spent almost two and a half years in a US prison, before being released on bail and placed under house arrest.

The original examination found that the baby had died from traumatic head injuries, bringing about a charge of murder against Ms. McCarthy.

However, more recent medical examinations reached conflicting conclusions which showed that the baby had suffered vertebrae fractures that had occurred in the weeks prior to her death, when she was not in the care of Ms. McCarthy.
