According to reports this afternoon the group behind the recent cyber attacks across the EU and the US did in fact try to hack the HSE’s IT system.
The news of the attempted attack was confirmed by Communications Minister Denis Naughten this afternoon.
It is understood the hackers did try to hack the health services system but were unable to penetrate the network’s firewall due to the sophisticated internal security system in place.
Speaking about the attack Minister Naughten told reporters: “There has been attempts in relation to the HSE infrastructure but thankfully they have been rebuffed.”
“This is being monitored on an ongoing basis. There is no guarantee we will avoid an attack but steps are being taken to minimise that.”
