New laws that will prevent convicted child sex offenders from travelling abroad – passes the first stages in the Dail

The Irish Government could become the first Government in Europe that will introduce a law that will prevent child sex offenders from travelling abroad.

In a move which will be a first for the EU, convicted child sex offenders will not be allowed to leave the country unless they receive a special order from a judge.

The new Sex Tourism Bill which has already passed preliminary stages in the Dail after it was submitted by Independent TD Maureen O’Sullivan, is being put forward in an effort to halt convicted peadophiles from travelling to regions where child sex abuse laws are rarely enforced to their fullest extent.

It is hoped that the new bill which has been drawn up with the help of children’s rights organisation the PREDA Foundationon, will be made into law before the end of the year.

The new bill if passed in the Dail will also see Ireland become the second country in the world to enforce such restrictions after Australia introduced a similar law last year.
