New legislation to increase retirement age for public sector workers passed in Seanad

There was some good news for public servants wishing to work longer as President Michael D Higgins is to sign a new law that will allow public sector workers work until the age of 70.

Under the new legislation which passed through the Seanad today, Public Servants will now be allowed to work for a further five years.

The new laws come after unions lobbied for change as many public sector workers felt they were being forced to retire at the age of 65, despite needing their income for longer.

It is expected that President Higgins will sign the new legislation into law before Christmas.
