New report calls for the ban of vending machines in schools in order to help cut childhood obesity

An Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills has called for the ban on the use of vending machines in schools it has been revealed today.

The call comes in an effort to cut childhood obesity, the report which also reviewed Physical Education facilities also called for better facilities and teaching programmes to be set up in order to combat the growing problem.

Although the Department of Education is yet to agree to any of the proposals which also include calls for fresh drinking water to be provided at every school.

It is believed the committee has outlined the criteria as part of a plan to work in line with the  recent sugar tax.

According to recent statistics Ireland is one of the lowest ranked nations when it comes to tackling childhood obesity.
