The details of sex offenders who are released from prison will be given to schools and neighbours under new laws being proposed by the Government.

Under the new laws proposed by the Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and the Minister for Communications Dennis Naughten, the details of high risk offenders will be given to schools and concerned residents for the first time ever.

In a move that will see convicted paedophiles and rapists being closely monitored upon their release from prison, offenders will also have to regularly sign in at their local Garda station.

The new proposals will also see high risk offenders being electronically tagged in order for their whereabouts to be tracked by the Gardai.

Although the new proposals have to be reviewed before they are sent to the Seanad, it is believed they could be implemented swiftly after they gained overwhelming support in the Dáil on Wednesday.
