No abortions will take place in Catholic Hospitals, say Bishops

In a code of ethics drafted by Irish Bishops, Catholic Hospitals in the country may end up breaking the law by refusing to permit the termination of the life of unborn babies, Kildare FM reported.

The Code of Ethical Standards for Healthcare, which sets the standard for services provided by Catholic hospitals in Ireland has forbidden abortion, contraception and sex change operations as well as most forms of assisted reproduction.

However, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has told the Dáil that while individuals involved in healthcare can opt out of taking part in the aborting of unborn babies, publicly funded hospitals may not, The Examiner reports.

The Catholic Church currently owns as many as 20 major hospitals in the Republic of Ireland including St Vincent’s and the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
