No Deal: Supermarkets could soon be forced to stop ‘two for one deals’ in order to become more environmentally friendly

Consumers could very well see themselves hard done by in the near future as supermarkets and grocery stores could be made end any 2 for 1 offers in order to cut down on waste.

The controversial move comes as the the Department of the Environment recently published it’s findings which shows that on average Ireland produces over 2 tonnes of waste each minute.

Although the ban on deals would be considered harsh by many in the retail sector, the Environment Minister Denis Naughten, said the the strategy must be introduced in order to comply with standards.

Mr Naughten also claimed the scheme has been highly successful elsewhere, saying: “We’re working with the supermarkets on these multi discounts, in the way offers are presented, the whole area of packaging.”

“Some of these initiatives have already been developed by some of the supermarket chains elsewhere in Europe and we’re looking to replicate those here.”
