No sense to use cents? 1 and 2 cent coins are starting to be phased out from today

There’ll be no more rooting around the bottom of your pocket or purse trying to find that 3 cents you owe the cashier who is standing there waiting as a queue taps their feet.

Starting from today, the country will see more or less an end to 1 and 2 cent coins.

Initially tried in Wexford with an instant major success for both retailers and customers, the price of things will be rounded up and down accordingly to the nearest 5 cent value.

So, those items costing €1.02 will now cost €1 and €1.04 will now cost €1.05.

The difference between today and yesterday will mean less change but supposedly an easier way to do business.

Anyone who is not in favour of the change can ask for their exact change though – the new transaction rule is not compulsory.
