The No side have come out to say that they’re very concerned that if yes wins tomorrow, babies diagnosed in the womb with Down Syndrome will be aborted merely for being Down Syndrome.

They say that the main problem is that “women will be able to abort unborn Irish babies who are diagnosed with Down Syndrome up to 6 months and claim that their mental health is at risk as an excuse to abort their baby who was diagnosed as Down Syndrome.”

No canvasser Rebecca Devine says:
“It’s a serious concern for many people. Babies who have Down Syndrome are just as loved as every other baby and our society needs to care for both mother and baby if they feel they need extra support in a scenario where an unborn baby is diagnosed as having Down Syndrome”.

“On the doors, it’s been a major reason many people will be voting No tomorrow. We don’t want Ireland to end up like the UK where 90% of babies who are diagnosed as having Down Syndrome in the womb are aborted”.
