Up to 110,000 people have found themselves stranded abroad after British airline Monarch ceased trading on Monday.
The airline’s Twitter account issued a message advising passengers not to go to the airport if they are due to fly today, as flights will not depart. Monarch’s website is also offline.
British authorities are now scrambling to put together a fleet of charter planes to get those stranded passengers home.
Monarch’s sudden collapse is unprecedented in terms of scale, but many had seen it coming for a long time.
The airline had been under severe financial pressure for some time as it faced stiff competition from budget carriers. The collapse of the British Pound’s value has also been cited as factor in Monarch’s demise.
Monarch’s tour operating business has also gone up in smoke.
