No White Christmas in Ireland after all as Sahara air mass drifts above us

sunnydecember

Weather stations across the country have recorded highest December temperatures in six decades, with peaks of nearly 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Despite earlier predictions of one of the harshest winters in living memory, the reality is turning out to be quite different.

A high of 15C was recorded at Phoenix Park on Wednesday, for instance. This is just 2C off the all-time high of 17C, recorded back in 1948. The usual December average at Phoenix Park is 5.3C.

The cause of this exceptionally mild weather is a southerly air mass dragging up mild, humid air from the Sahara.

And the prediction is for this mild weather to continue in the run-up to Christmas Day, thus ruling out any chance of the white stuff decorating towns and villages across the country.
