Noonan: ‘Fine Gael are open to the possibility of forming a coalition with Fianna Fáil’

We could soon be looking at a Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael coalition after the Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said his party are open to the possibility of a partnership with their rivals.

The news is seen as significant step in the right direction towards what seemed an unlikely government, due to the fact that Mr Noonan is one of the most senior ministers within the Fine Gael party. The move is seen by many as counter measure to Sinn Féin’s recent announcement in which they say they will nominate Gerry Adams for the position of Taoiseach on Thursday.

Minister Noonan revealed that he and Fine Gael plan on holding further talks with Fianna Fáil later this week. Mr Noonan told reporters: “The Taoiseach has got involved in a series of discussions, starting with individual independents and smaller parties,” said Noonan. “But of course that will evolve, I presume, after Thursday into discussions with Fianna Fáil and then we’ll see where that goes.”
