Noonan: “I fully expect Mr Kenny to remain in office until Brexit negotiations are over this June”

The Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has said he believes that the Taoiseach Enda Kenny will remain in office until June at least.

Speaking to RTE Mr Noonan said the Taoiseach will stay on until negotiations with the EU and the UK over Brexit are over at the beginning of the summer.

Mr Noonan also said Mr Kenny’s involvement in the negotiations is crucial as his experience in international discussions speaks for itself.

Minister Noonan noted that Mr Kenny’s speech on immigration in the US showed how diplomatic the Taoiseach can be.

Mr Noonan said: “His speech on immigration has been lauded internationally and to be able to make such a strong speech in the company of President Trump, when we know his position on immigration, shows how diplomatic the Taoiseach can be.”

“So certainly for the primary principles of the negotiations, which won’t conclude until end of April/early May, the Taoiseach should be in position.”

“But it’s my own opinion that he should stay on for the second phase as well, until the details of Ireland’s negotiations position have been established and have been signed off on, and that’s the end of May, early June.”
