Not done yet – President Higgins is said to be strongly considering running for a second term in office

The current President of Ireland Michael D Higgins has seemingly changed his stance in regards to running for a second term in office.

President Higgins who previously stated that he only intended to serve a single term in office may run for a second term after he received overwhelming support from political leaders including the current Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

The news of President Higgins supposed change of heart will surely put a change of thoughts in voters minds as to whom to elect as the next leader of Ireland.

It is thought that former Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern was one of the front runners to take the position once President Higgins steps down from his current role next year.
