Not too close: Motorists could be given penalty points for driving too close to cyclists

Motorists could be soon about to receive penalty points if they are caught driving too close to cyclists, it has been revealed.

The new laws which have received the full backing of the Minister for Transport Shane Ross, will see motorists being heavily penalised if they caught driving too close to cyclists.

Under the new proposals penalty points will be issued out if a driver is caught driving within 1 metre of a cyclist in 50kmh zone, whilst those driving within 1.5 metres of cyclist on roads with higher speed limits will also get points on their licence.

Although the RSA have produced a report outlining some potential flaws within the new proposals, Minister Ross has said he is more than happy to introduce the new laws as it has proven successful in other countries such as the US and New Zealand.

It is thought the new laws could come in for strong criticism from motorists as many have claimed some roads would make it almost impossible to abide by the rules as they are significantly smaller to impose the law.
