It has been confirmed today that the long-awaited Oireachtas Banking Inquiry will finally commence its public hearings in two weeks’ time.
The Oireachtas committee will begin hearing public evidence from experts on December 17 and 18.
The first public witnesses to provide evidence will be Finnish banking expert Peter Nyberg, and former Canadian civil servant Rob Wright.
It is understood that these preliminary hearings will probe the background to the financial crisis, before switching focus to the actual crisis itself sometime next year.
