US naval assets attached to Carrier Strike Group 2 (CSG-2) have hit ISIS positions from their deployment area in the Eastern Mediterranean.
CSG-2, which includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush (CVN-77), arrived at its current theater of operations on June 5.
The strikes were part of Operation Inherent Resolve, a US-led military campaign against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria.
Elsewhere, the US has been supplying weapons to arm a militia fighting ISIS in Raqqa, Syria. The city of Raqqa was seized by ISIS in 2014, and has been under its control ever since.
The 55,000-strong militia, including mostly Kurdish fighters, has received machine guns and assault rifles from the US. The militia is considered to be a ‘key fighting force’ in the ongoing campaign against ISIS.
