Opinion: Sinead O’Connor needs to get off social media and get the help she so desperately needs

Ridiculed, maligned, laughed at.

Sinead O’Connor’s public meltdowns, rants and family problems have been thrust into the forefront of media for all to digest.

Her Facebook posts have included accusations, assertions, remorse, thoughts, contemplations and even various cries for help.

The 49-yr-old’s latest plight is one of a missing person in Chicago after she failed to return to her hotel after a morning bike ride.

The world’s media took hold. The “Nothing compares 2 u” singer not only stopped all Irish and English news, but Fox news had a red alert across America that the singer was “missing” with extreme concern for her welfare.

Thankfully, Sinead turned up a number of hours later, safe, well but annoyed seemingly at her family.

She took to Facebook to sound off about the matter.

Meanwhile in the world of social media, the singer has become somewhat of a joke, an easy target, someone to make fun of with no bearing on thoughts or feelings.

In my opinion, Sinead O’Connor needs to step back from her posts, look at and acknowledge them for what they are – a genuine cry for mental help.

There is far too much talk of depression by those who DON’T have it. A feeling of being down is not depression, the word itself is used far too flippantly and loosely. It’s a genuine problem and one that shouldn’t be overlooked but likewise shouldn’t be over used it.

I’m not saying Sinead has depression, she may well be and feel fine – but from a social media reader, user and commentators perspective, the woman needs to steady the ship, and regain control of her emotions and mental health.

Some of the vitriol used against her just wasn’t fair and isn’t justified. Empathy is needed here, not sarcasm.

The singer may well be famous, may not be to everyone’s taste musically (including mine), but she is just a woman – who blatantly needs help.

Without sounding condescending, I hope this article reaches you Sinead
, and I sincerely hope you get the help you need and deserve.
