Optimistic: HSE requests the Government provide €100m for mental health services in next month’s Budget despite known cuts in recent years

The HSE have submitted a request to both the Department of Health and the Government to provide them with an estimated €100m for mental health services next year.

It is understood say they are requesting the extra funding in order to cover existing and new services.

The HSE say they need at least €65m to cover the cost of existing level of service for current patients around the country.

However they also revealed that a further €35m is needed in order to open and develop new services for vulnerable people in areas that are already stretched.

Although the request for more funding is seen as a positive step in tackling the issue, many mental health awareness advocacy groups have said the request is somewhat optimistic given the Government’s decision to cut funding in the vital area in recent years.
