A journalist in the UK has received a backlash of criticism after she outrageously claimed that Ireland is not a real nation.
With the fallout of Brexit still dominating the front pages on both sides of the Irish sea, it seems The Times columnist Melanie Phillips, has had a lot to say about the Irish nation as a whole.
The controversial columnist has left many taking to social media to voice their disgust after she wrote an article that claimed Ireland had a “tenuous claim to nationhood.”
In the rather long piece that discusses the impact of Brexit on Ireland, Phillips’ claims that Ireland is not really a fully fledged country and should consider joining Britain and leave the EU.
In an extract from the column, Phillips wrote: “Does that mean that Westminster should tear up the Good Friday agreement and bid farewell to Northern Ireland? No, because it has an obligation to the Unionists; and because the claim to unite Ireland is tenuous, since Ireland itself has a tenuous claim to nationhood, having seceded from Britain as the Irish Free State only in 1922.”
“Britain, by contrast, is an authentic unitary nation.”
