At least 41 people have been killed and dozens more have been injured after a fire broke out at a South Korean hospital on Friday morning.

The devastating fire which broke out at 7:35am (10 35pm Irish time) in the Sejong Hospital in Miryang, tragically claimed the lives of 41 people who reportedly died of smoke inhalation.

According to the Yonhap news agency around 79 people have been injured in the fire which is thought to have broken out in the hospital’s emergency room.

It is believed of those 79 injured eight of those are in critical condition.

Police investigating the incident say they are unsure as to what may have caused the fire, but they have confirmed none of the victims died from burn injuries.

It is thought most of the victims killed in the fire died from smoke inhalation after they became trapped on the first and second floors of the six storey building.

Reports say Firefighters were halted from getting to the patients in the intensive care unit as it required staff to supervise the process.

Meanwhile in a statement a police spokesperson said all patients who were rescued from the burning building have since been transferred to other hospitals in the region.
