Pat Rabbite: ‘The abolition of the USC is fanciful’

Labour’s Pat Rabbite spoke these words in answer to the comments made by SIPTU president Jack O’Connor.

Mr. O’Connor said that union congress’ support for the Labour Party could not be guaranteed unless the controversial and ‘temporary’ USC is axed.

The USC reportedly brings in over €4bn in revenue for the Government. The tax was introduced during the height of the financial crisis as a ‘temporary’ measure. Yet, it is still here, a few years down the line. Minister for Finance Michael Noonan recently said that the tax is indeed here to stay.

Mr Rabbitte added that the Government’s task involves more than keeping the union happy.
