The legendary Limerick man has played his last rugby match for Ireland.

Today it was confirmed that because of the severe hamstring injury he received playing France on Sunday will result in him missing the rest of the World Cup.

O’Connell was supposed to move to France when the World Cup finished and he had previously said that this tournament would be his last with Ireland.

Leinster second row Mike McCarthy is set to replace him and joins the team today.

Joe Schmidt spoke yesterday of his fear “I suspect it probably is, Paul is the one who worries me most. It doesn’t look great with Paul”.

In 2013 the man known as “Poc” took over from Jamie Heaslip as the Irish Captain.

He played for Munster for almost a decade and a half and won to Heineken Cups with them.

He has since played 175 times for Munster, 108 times for Ireland and was captain of the Lions.
