Heather Humphries, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht announced that she had given permission for Lucasfilm to film on the ancient heritage site.

However, Ms Humphries stated firmly that strong environmental and ecological conditions are being implemented so that neither the site nor its bird life will be negatively impacted.

Lucasfilm will be filming “The Force Awakens” a new Star Wars film.

There had been objections from An Taisce, stating that the area was extremely sensitive, and that the UNESCO world heritage site was at risk by filming.

Specialist staff from the National Monuments Service and Wildlife Service are to be present for all filming and have the authority to cease filming should concerns arise.

16 measures are to be put in place, one being that filming is  only allowed in the month of September.

Minister Humphries has insisted that allowing this filming to take place that it will boost Ireland’s attractiveness as an international film location.
