Three aircraft inbound to Dublin Airport were diverted to Shannon and Belfast earlier this evening due to strong crosswinds. It is understood two other planes were also diverted later on.

Severe gusts of wind and heavy rain lashed the country today, though there are reports that the weather will begin improving towards the middle of the week.

Late Wednesday and the whole of Thursday are expected to bring about finer weather, while Friday and beyond remain uncertain at this time due to the presence of two separate weather system converging over Ireland.

Depending on which one prevails, the weekend could be a hot one, or be full of thunderstorms.
