Police authorities in the UK have confirmed that a couple who were found critically ill at their home in Amesbury, have been exposed to the deadly nerve agent novichok.

The confirmation of the suspected poisoning comes after the couple who have been named as Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess were found seriously ill at a house on the Muggleton Road on Saturday evening.

Although investigating officers were working under the suspicion that the couple became ill after ingesting tainted illegal drugs, they have now launched a major investigation after toxic substances was found at the house.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, officers from the British counter terrorism police confirmed that traces of the deadly nerve agent was found at the premises following testing at Porton Down laboratory.

Police say the couple remain in critical condition at Salisbury District Hospital. They also confirmed that a number of areas in both Salisbury and Amesbury have been sealed off in order for forensic testing to take place.

The latest suspected poisoning attack comes just four months after former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter were found slumped over on a park bench in Salisbury.

It is believed that Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess were exposed to the same nerve agent that was used in the Salisbury attack.

Counter terrorism police say they are currently trying to determine how the couple came into contact with the substance and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile the British government have confirmed that a Cobra meeting is set to take place later today to discuss the latest developments in the case.
