It is understood the police officer who was policing the crowd surrounding the San Mames Stadium, suffered the heart attack after he recieved a head injury during an altercation with rioting fans of Atlethic Bilbao and Spartark Moscow.

The officers tragic passing comes after both set of supporters clashed minutes before the match kicked off.

According to Diario AS the violent scenes occurred after a section of Russian fans without tickets attempted to cause disruption by setting off flares and fireworks on the streets of Basque City.
