At least four people are injured as police forces move into the downtown Sydney cafe where up to 30 people were kept hostage for over 15 hours.

The gunman had been identified as Muslim cleric and Iranian refugee Man Haron Monis, who is well known to security forces. He recently gained notoriety by writing offensive letters to the families of Australian soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan.

Police stormed the building using live rounds and stun grenades. Gunfire was heard for about 30 seconds.

At least four people were seen being taken away in stretchers. One woman was reportedly bleeding heavily from one leg.
