After the indecisive outcome of Election 2016, a few weeks of political wrangling followed, with both main parties attempting to garner enough support to form a somewhat stable government.
Neither party has so far achieved that, however, and the spectre of a so-called ‘grand coalition’ between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail raised its ugly head for a time.
However, Micheal Martin has now confirmed that there won’t be any such coalition, and that he’d rather go through a second election, instead of breaking a pre-election promise.
In the meantime, Enda Kenny is reportedly doing intense leg work behind the scenes, offering plush Cabinet positions to Independent TDs in exchange of their support.
