U.S President Donald Trump has said he will “economically devastate” Turkey if they follow through with plans to attack the Kurdish region of Syria.
President Trump announced the pull-out of U.S troops from Syria late last month and Turkey’s Islamist President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he is determined to counter the Kurdish “terrorists”.
The US has trained, armed and backed the Kurdish YPG forces in Syria and Iraq whom Turkey claims has close links to the PKK which has been engaged in a sporadic insurgency against Turkey for decades.
The Turkish government regard the YPG as terrorists and has signalled its readiness to engage in military action against them in Syria. This may bring the NATO member into a confrontation with not only the Kurds but also the Syrian government, Russia and now the US.
