Race underway – Both Varadkar and Coveney promise to look after the Irish people’s interests if they are elected the next Fine Gael party leader

The race to succeed Enda Kenny as Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach has already gotten underway today as the two most favoured candidates Simon Coventry and Leo Varadkar got their campaigns up running this afternoon.

With the door on Enda Kenny’s reign shut less than 24 hours both TD’s have vowed to look after the Irish people if they are elected leader of the party.

Speaking at lunch meeting to launch his campaign the current Minister for Housing Simon Coventry vowed to look after the Irish people’s interests and what is important to them rather than just Ireland’s economy.

Mr Coveney who has also received the backing of a number of party ministers including Simon Harris, also claimed that he will provide more support to those in rural areas outside of Dublin rather than solely focusing on the capital.

Meanwhile the Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has also got his campaign underway today and he has also received the backing of many Fine Gael TD’s including former party leader candidate Richard Bruton who said Mr Varadkar is the right man for the job given his vast political experience.
