Speaking at an interview during the opening day of the Web Summit this morning, Enda Kenny ruled out the possibility of a referendum about the possible future sell-off or privatisation of Irish Water.

Instead, he said, the Government will introduce ‘stronger’ legislation to prevent such move.

The opposition parties are calling for a constitutional amendment to ensure that the utility company remains in State control.

The Government is under ongoing pressure over the very existence of Irish Water. Last weekend, tens of thousands of people marched nationwide to protest against water charges, calling for these charges, and Irish Water itself, to be scrapped.
