The outrageous shambles that is Irish Water has taken another twist for the worst today, with the revelation that landlords across the country may need to raise the deposits taken from prospective tenants as much as threefold.
Last night, the Coalition approved plans to deduct oustanding water charges from wages and social welfare payments, for those who do not pay.
However, the proposal also included a clause forcing landlords to withhold deposits from renters until proof of payment of charges is forthcoming.
Landlords had been lobbying sternly against such move, as it essentially makes landlords debt collectors for Irish Water.
The fallout from such move may see deposits disputes rise exponentially, and may also force landlords to triple the amount they take upfront from tenants.
