Ross: “The Department of Transport is fully committed to naming and shaming drink drivers”

The Minister for Transport Shane Ross has revealed today that he is still fully in favour of a proposal that would see drink drivers being named and shamed before being placed on a live register.

Mr Ross who outlined the plans back in November said such a system is needed as the issue of drink driving is a “huge and major problem for Ireland”.

Speaking earlier today, Mr Ross said he is not just “exploring” the idea of naming and shaming. “I’m fully committed to it,” he revealed.

Before further explaining: “Yeah, absolutely, bar some obstacles in terms of data provision, there are difficulties in terms of data and releasing that sort of data, but I think we can overcome it.”

“We obviously have to go to the Attorney General and we have to look at the European rules, but I’m committed to the idea, and I’m committed to doing it.”

Mr Ross’s comments come after Gardaí recently revealed there were over 500 arrests made for drink driving offences during the month of December.
