Archbishop Éamon Martin, the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, has asked Catholics to respectfully lobby their public representatives, including TDs and Councillors, not to proceed with changing the Republic’s abortion laws.
The well-liked Archbishop essentially said in a pastoral message for the New Year that repealing the Eighth Amendment would see widespread abortion on demand.
Dr Martin spoke of church teaching that ending an unborn child’s life is “always evil and can never be justified”.
The proposed change in abortion law’s would see women able to terminate their unborn baby’s life for any reason up to 3 months – effectively ‘abortion on demand’.
Archbishop Martin said that if the Eighth Amendment is repealed it would lead to a very liberal abortion regime, especially given scientific evidence that shows an unborn baby has a heartbeat from around 4 weeks and fingers, toes and the formation of the entire body by 3 months.
