The Irish Cancer Society has called on the HSE to intervene and address the issue of spiraling parking charges for terminally ill patients.
The call comes after a recent report found that a staggering €18.75m was spent in hospital car parks across the country last year.
The latest figure marks a €4m increase from 2015, when €14.7m was spent on parking.
According to ICS figures on average cancer patients pay up to €63 per week in car parking charges, which is now seen as major problem.
A spokesperson for the charity now say the HSE must address the issue as the spiraling costs are having a effect on patients as their resources are relatively small due to their illness.
The ICS say the HSE must work with hospitals around the country to provide a system were charges are reduced for vulnerable patients.
