School of mam and dad – Government plan to hire parents as supervisors during teachers strike

With secondary school teachers set to undertake strike action at the end of this month, next month and December, a few teenagers could be forgiven in thinking that they are set for a few days/weeks off, well it seems like they are set to be disappointed as the Government have reportedly drawn up plans that will see parents supervise schools during the strike action

According to The Irish Times the Department of Education along with school management bodies have already devised a contingency plan that will see schools remain open.

It is believed that Department of Education are that desperate not to let the strike action intervene with the school year, they are willing to issue application forms to willing parents of schoolchildren in affected schools to become supervisors for a nominal fee of €38-a-day.

However, the proposal is unlikely to be plain sailing as most schools affected by the strikes will not be able to properly asses supervisors given the short time frame.

The news of the drastic plan comes after the teachers union (ASTI)overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action in an effort to improve pay and conditions.
