Do you ever wish you had more time on your side, well we will have more time (although it may not be much) as rare phenomenon called a leap second will apparently happen on the June 30th which will make this particular day be 24 hours and 1 second long.

Scientists say the phenomenon will happen because the Earth will actually take 365.25 days to make its journey around the Sun rather than 365 days. Although the majority of this time gives us an extra day in February every four years. This year there will be an alteration to the time due to the Earth’s current rotation not being stable thanks to gravity from the moon, the sun and other planets and the fact that it’s filled with molten liquid rather than solid rock; all of which pulls it out of sync say scientists.

Top scientists at NASA, say that the average day has gotten longer by an average of 2.5 milliseconds since 1820. They say the leap second will occur because of modern technology requires absolute precise timing which means that a reset is needed every so often, which results in a leap second being created.

Scientists say there has been 26 extra seconds since January 1, 1972. Meaning that the leap second will happen on 23.59.60 on June 30th this year.
