Ireland will have its very own Independence Day after a motion submitted by Fianna Fáil was overwhelmingly passed in the Seanad.

The new commemorative day which will be marked on the 21st of January each year, has been introduced to mark the first sitting of the Dáil in 1919.

However those of you hoping for a Bank Holiday on January 21st, will be left disappointed as the Government confirmed that the day will not be an official public holiday.

It is expected that Senator Dr Keith Swanick’s Bill will now go before the Dáil ahead of the summer recess after it was overwhelmingly passed in the Seanad on Thursday.

The date is a significant event in Irish history as it seen the first ever meeting of the Dáil at Dublin’s Mansion House.
