At least one in five women in Ireland are experiencing domestic or sexual abuse, according to the National Womens’ Council.
The Council have stated that people do not understand fully the nature or the extent of the problem.
There will be a conference held in Dublin today to evaluate methods of gathering information that could help protect women and girls.
Noeline Blackwell, CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre will be a guest speaker at the conference.
She stated: “Data is collected somewhat piecemeal in Ireland and doesn’t link up and therefore we can’t understand the problem that well.
“And when we can’t understand the problem, it’s very hard to propose good solutions.”
