37,000 Eir customers have seen their personal details compromised in a data breach after an unencrypted laptop containing the information was stolen on Sunday 12 August the telecommunications company has said in a statement RTE reports.

The laptop did not contain the financial details of the customers but did hold their email addresses and customer numbers.

The data breach was immediately reported to the Data Protection Commissioner and to the Gardaí all customers affected are to be made aware by Wednesday though the company says there is no evidence to suggest the data has been utilised.

The laptop had been decrypted by a faulty security update shortly before being stolen and the other company laptops affected have since been re-encrypted.

A number Liberal readers contacted us with concerns over the breach and said that they’ll be changing provider in case of future episodes of their personal details, such as potentially their address, phone number, date of birth and credit card information being compromised.
