The President of the Garda Representative association, Ciaran O’Neill, has revealed that seven Gardaí have been victims of suicide in just the last year.
According to RTE, Mr O’Neil made the tragic revelation at the GRA’s annual conference in Wexford on Tuesday and went on to state “Our Welfare Officers do not have the full supports they need to provide a proper service.”
Low pay, long hours and stressful work environments continue to be blight on the moral of the Gardaí.
It was also revealed that one in six Gardaí may be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder a survey of the rank and file members has shown.
In an effort to combat this a new welfare information service has been launched in order to alleviate some of the stresses placed on members of force.
