Shocking: The number homeless people in Dublin reaches record high in the month of January

According to figures released by homeless charity advocacy groups there were a staggering 125 families left homeless in Dublin last month.

Those alarming figures are also coincide with the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, who now say there are now 769 families in emergency accommodation, that appalling figure figure reportedly includes 1,570 children. The Homeless executive say 125 new families presented to homeless services in the Dublin region last month, whilst only 39 families departed from its services.

They also revealed that nine families, which had been homeless sometime in the last two years, were forced to return for help after their new accommodation proved unsustainable. The news has angered charity group Focus Ireland who say the worrying figure of 125 represents the “highest ever monthly increase in family homelessness.”

The news has prompted the charity group to call on the next government to set a firm target date for ending family homelessness and a commitment to build 40,000 social homes over the next five years. Focus Ireland’s Mike Allen said: “The consequences of inaction are now being felt by the families affected and said the vast majority of the families are becoming homeless due to economic factors rather than social ones.”
