It was another good day for Irish sport this afternoon as 23 year old Niamh McCarthy, won Ireland’s first medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

McCarthy who won silver in last summer’s Rio Paralympics yet again added to her collection by claiming another silver medal in the F41 discus final.

The Cork native took home the silver medal after she recorded a mammoth throw of 26.17m in the fifth round at London’s Olympic Stadium this afternoon.

McCarthy’s win betters her previous result at the championship when she claimed bronze two years ago.

It is hoped the 23 year old’s recent success will be the first of many medals for Irish athletes who are taking part at the championships this week.
