Smart Energy but at a cost – electricity customers will be given smart energy meters that will cost €1.2bn to install

Electricity Bills could soon be less expensive or more costly for costumers after The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) announced that Smart electricity meters will be introduced to every home and business across the country.

According to RTE News, the CER hope to have the new meters installed in every home and business by 2024. It is believed the project which will cost €1.2 billion will initially begin in 2019.

However the introduction of the new meters will most likely be met with criticism from consumers as they will be forced to pay approximately €5.50 per year over the next 20 years to cover the cost of their meter installation.

Although the CER have moved to ease consumers concerns by saying the new meters will be beneficial as customers will be able to monitor their electricity usage more closely which in turn could potentially lead to savings on their electricity bills.
