The International Energy Agency has today warned that European countries should prepare for a total shutdown of gas supplies from Russia.
According to The Independent, the agency has said that “ Europe should take preparatory action, including keeping ageing nuclear power stations online Europe should be ready in case Russian gas is completely cut off,” said the IEA’s executive director Faith Birol.
“The nearer we are to winter, the more we understand Russia’s intentions,” he said.
“I believe the cuts are geared towards avoiding Europe filling storage, and increasing Russia’s leverage in the winter months.”
The warning comes as Europe prepares itself for a winter of shortages and price hikes.
