State accountant reveals that it costs €15m to hold a nationwide referendum

According to the the chief accountant for the state it is understood that it officially costs in the region of €15m to hold a referendum here.

The state Comptroller and Auditor General Seamus McCarthy revealed the cost whilst he addressed the Oireachtas committee recently. Mr McCarthy also revealed that the state spent significantly more back in 2011 on general elections which came to a total of €65m. The above amount was spent on two elections which decided who would come into government and who become our next President.

Mr McCarthy went onto claim that  the €15m cost for a single referendum may not tell the whole story.
