Storm Diana update: 40,000 people now left without electricity as the storm ravages the country

About 40,000 customers have been left without electricity due to the ferocity of Storm Diana.

An ESB spokesperson has confirmed that it is not safe for crews to begin repair work until winds have eased down significantly.

The weather front is currently tracking near the south west of Ireland, and two Orange Weather Warnings have now been extended.

People are urged to avoid coastal areas until the worst has passed.
