Storm Frank is currently sweeping across the country, causing havoc to power grids and transportation hubs.

Heavy rainfall is causing biblical flooding in some areas, particularly in South Galway, where residents are tonight desperately pleading with the Government to assist them.

The area has been described as a “disaster zone”, with vast swathes expected to remain under several feet of water for weeks to come.

Army units have been deployed to help the civilian population.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM, County Councillor Michael Fahy called on the Taoiseach to visit the area and see first hand the urgency of the situation. The Councillor said “This is going to last indeed for several weeks yet and the people are ringing me day and night, stating that they can no longer accept this or will not accept this, the government of the day – no matter who is in government have got to do something.”
